An Elegant Engagement at the Rhode Island State House

The Rhode Island State House has a way of making every moment feel a little more timeless. Between the grand marble steps, sweeping columns, and that iconic white dome catching the light, it’s easily one of my favorite locations for an engagement session—equal parts elegant and understated. And for this particular session, it couldn’t have been a more fitting backdrop.

This one was especially meaningful to me.

I first met the groom-to-be years ago while photographing college basketball.  Over time, he became someone who consistently supported and appreciated my work. You never really know where those connections will lead, so when he reached out about photographing his engagement session, I was genuinely excited—not just for the opportunity, but for what it represented. It felt like things had come full circle in the best way.

And then I met his fiancée.

She was exactly the kind of person you hope your clients are—warm, kind, and completely present. From the moment we started, it was obvious how well they balanced each other. They had this effortless chemistry that didn’t need much direction. A lot of what I do is about guiding couples into natural moments, but with them, it was more about stepping back and letting things unfold.

We spent the session wandering around the State House grounds, taking advantage of the soft light reflecting off the marble and the architecture's symmetry. The wide-open spaces gave us room for those quiet, intimate moments, while the steps and columns added just enough drama to elevate everything visually.

Sessions like this remind me why I love what I do. It’s not just about beautiful locations or perfectly composed frames—it’s about connection, history, and being invited into a small but significant part of someone’s story.
